A powerful series of earthquakes, the strongest recorded at 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale, struck Tibet near the Nepal-Tibet border early Tuesday morning. The tremors were felt across a wide region, impacting parts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. According to Chinese state media, the disaster has claimed at least 53 lives and injured 62 others.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake occurred at 6:35 a.m., with its epicenter located 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche near the Nepal-Tibet border. The region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, is known for its seismic activity, often causing significant uplifts in the Himalayan mountains.

The powerful quake hit the northern foothills of the Himalayas near one of Tibet’s most sacred cities, resulting in at least 53 deaths. Tremors were felt across neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, and India, causing buildings to sway and sparking widespread panic.

The USGS noted that the region has experienced 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater in the past century. However, this is the most powerful quake recorded within a 200-kilometer radius in the last five years.
